Since Scott announced his candidacy for the South Carolina House of Representatives, many folks have asked me about campaigning and its impact on our family life. Well, in short it has been very exciting and hectic around the Singer household to say the least. But, this truly is a family effort and we try to approach it as an exciting journey. As Scott’s Mom used to say, “Happiness is found along the way – not at the end of the road.” The truth is we’ve been in campaign mode for an entire year. Last June Scott became John McCain’s Campaign Chairman for Aiken County and later was named to the South Carolina Leadership Team. We have always admired Senator McCain so naturally Scott was delighted to play such an integral part in his Presidential Campaign. Scott worked very hard on behalf of the Senator and we were fortunate to have him visit Aiken County on four separate occasions. His first visit was back in July and we were honored As we now know, McCain surprised the political pundits and emerged victorious in Aiken County and South Carolina. As they say, the rest is history! We are grateful to have had the opportunity to play a minor role in his success. Once the decision was made, the transition to our own campaign came rather easily. However, when Scott and I talked to the boys about running, Brad couldn’t hide his disappointment. His response was, “But Dad you can’t run for Statehouse, John McCain is going to pick you for Vice President.” In his six year old mind he envisioned McCain-Singer as the perfect ticket (he worships his Dad).

to host a reception for the Senator in our home. Our two sons, Brad and Andrew immediately became huge McCainiacs. What a role model for our boys – the Senator is a true American hero and embodies many of the character traits we are trying to instill in them. On his second visit Brad and Andrew were invited to ride with the Senator and Mrs. McCain on the Straight Talk Express. What a thrill for them (and us)!
With less than two months before the primary election, things are really heating up. For those who may have not been directly involved in a political campaign, it’s hard to describe the added stress and strain it generates. But as John McCain himself has said many times, “Each of us has a duty to serve a cause greater than our own self-interest.” Scott has worked hard on behalf of our community and our State, volunteered countless hours on behalf of a host of worthy causes, and served tirelessly on County Council. If he/we are fortunate enough to win on June 10, this will give him the opportunity to have an even greater positive impact on our great State.
